Las Cruces Public Schools is now part of eight other school districts in New Mexico that provide virtual courses across the state.

This as the state aims to expand learning opportunistic for students throughout the entire state.

The courses are offered through the New Mexico Virtual Course Consortium, which is a growing network of public districts that provide courses to students state-wide.

Criss Grubbs the Executive Director of Virtual Teaching and Learning at LCPS says the pandemic highlighted the want and need for virtual learning.

"The New Mexico Public Education Department saw the need to expand learning opportunities for students around the state," she said, "There was a statewide need for students to be able to access classes online and we wanted to be able to offer those high-quality classes to students all over the state."

"Through the pandemic, they saw the need for students who wanted to continue to take online classes once they came back to schools and so this is a way to support other districts around the state of New Mexico," she added.

The way it works is a student over in Hatch, New Mexico may not have a course available in their district but it may be offered in LCPS.

That student is then able to enroll through this virtual program.

Right now, the program offers more than 90 courses for students, ten of those being AP classes.

Courses range from foreign languages to sciences and math.

The program is offered for students from elementary through high school.

LCPS says that education continues to be redefined in the virtual settings and this allows for student success regardless of where they live.
