March 2, 2022
Dear MUFSD Community,
We were excited to welcome students and staff back to school this morning in a mask-optional environment. While it was wonderful to see the faces of those who decided not to wear masks, we want to reiterate our emphasis on ensuring that every student (mask or no mask) feels comfortable in our schools. We are committed to prioritizing a safe and welcoming environment, where students and staff remain respectful of personal family choices around mask wearing.
Late last evening, the NY State Department of Health issued its revised COVID-19 protocols, which we have begun following effective today. Click here to read the school guidance in its entirety.
New Relaxed Protocols Based on NY State Guidance
- Masking is no longer required on our school grounds, including in classrooms, cafeterias, during extracurricular activities/sports or on school buses, with the following exceptions:
- COVID-19 positive individuals who return to school after the required 5-day isolation period must wear a mask on days 6 through 10; mask wearing is required through the 10th day after the onset of symptoms or positive diagnosis.
- Students who visit the nurse’s office due to experiencing symptoms consistent with COVID must wear a mask.
-
Social distancing is no longer required (with exceptions for individuals returning from having tested positive for COVID). We will provide opportunities for distancing at lunchtime in the near-term for all students.
-
Visitors are permitted in our schools providing they are feeling well and not experiencing any COVID symptoms
We will continue to prioritize efforts to keep our students, faculty and staff healthy and safe. Still in effect is our weekly surveillance testing program for students and staff who have opted in. We expect students to test prior to returning to school after symptoms. Please make sure you continue your family’s vigilance and do not send your child to school if he/she is not feeling well.
Today marks an important milestone. Our schools were shut down more than two years ago due to the pandemic. We are now on our way towards a more normalized school experience for your children and look forward to a bright spring ahead - a spring full of vibrant and engaging learning opportunities and meaningful social interactions.
Enjoy the day!
Respectfully,
Dr. Robert I. Shaps
Superintendent of Schools
