The Mount Vernon City School District is hosting a parent workshop via Zoom on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, from 6 to 7 p.m. The webinar, Pathways to Healing, will provide information about navigating substance abuse and mental wellbeing. The Mount Vernon City School District will be hosting the Athletics Sports Awards Ceremony on Thursday, June 6, 2024, at Mount Vernon High School.

Denzel Washington School of the Arts will host a poetry slam in celebration of National Poetry Month on Friday, April 19, 2024, at 12:30 p.m. in the Phyllicia Rashad Auditorium. Students will be reciting original and published pieces. Join for an exciting afternoon of spoken word, music and poems! The poetry slam will be streamed on Facebook.
Pennington School and Benjamin Turner Academy will be hosting a dance to celebrate children with unique needs on Thursday, April 25, 2024, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Pennington School. Attire is formal, dress to impress.
Mount Vernon High School Career and Technical Education Department presents the House That Time Forgot Competition on April 25, 2024, at 12 p.m. CTE entrepreneurship students will pitch ideas to finish the house started by CTE students in 1996.
The Mount Vernon City School District will hold its first No Place for Hate (NPFH) Day on Wednesday, May 29, 2024. Families are encouraged to walk their children to school in a show of unity against hate, bullying, bias and acts of unkindness.

Beginning Tuesday, February 13, 2024, the Mount Vernon Police Department is holding its Citizen's Police Academy every Tuesday from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The program ends on April 23. Anyone 18 and over can register for classes to learn about the police department. Participants meet with different departments, ride around the city, and learn CPR and first aid. The program is free.

The Mount Vernon City School District has opened a Parent Technology Help Desk to provide support to parents and family members who need assistance with instructional technology devices. The help desk will hold support sessions every Thursday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Education Center.

School District News
In the lower level of Mount Vernon STEAM Academy, students can often be found afterschool collaborating digitally and competing in an unconventional way. The STEAM Knights Esports Club began in October 2023, with an official ribbon cutting on December 18. Now in April 2024, the club has approximately 60 participants and is providing students with an engaging and competitive afterschool activity.

We are collectively letting out a sigh of relief in the Mount Vernon City School District, as we have been notified that our state aid funding for the upcoming school year will not be reduced. After over a month of lobbying with state and local officials, we prevailed and will receive the $2.9 million that was set to be removed from our budget in Governor Kathy Hochul’s budget proposal.
The sounds of rhyming and snapping emanated from the Phylicia Rashad Auditorium, as Denzel Washington School of the Arts hosted their annual DWSA Poetry Slam on Friday, April 19, 2024.The event was held as a celebration of April’s National Poetry Month.
Sparkly dresses, suits and jewelry adorned the stage of the Mount Vernon High School auditorium for the Knights Boutique’s “Say Yes to the Dress or Tux” event on Friday, April 19, 2024. Students from MVHS chose prom attire during the school day, and students from each of the other high schools in the District picked out clothes in the evening.
Ms. Stephanie Tirado's preschool class strutted their stuff and showed off their clothing designs for the first ever pre-K fashion show at Cecil H. Parker School on Thursday, April 18, 2024. Scholars were joined by local fashion designer Brittini Heflin, who is a proud Mount Vernon City School District graduate.
A presentation filled with music, games and jokes was held at Mount Vernon STEAM Academy on Friday, April 19, 2024. Shaun Derik, a motivational speaker, visited the school to inspire students to chase their dreams and reconnect with their passion and natural-born gifts.
Holding paper cups filled with soil, students dipped their fingers into the soil to plant a seed and celebrate Earth Day at Mount Vernon Honor Academy on Thursday April 18, 2024. Students throughout the school also learned about Earth Day in different activities during the day.

Benjamin Turner Academy 7th graders put all their art skills to the test to make their favorite snacks supersized on Thursday, April 18, 2024. Students learned muralist grid techniques, color theory to color-match, and used recycled materials to make their bags 3-dimensional. These vibrant and playful pieces showcase the talent and imagination of our artists, demonstrating their ability to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary!
Secondary students in the Superintendent’s Advisory Council stood in front of the room and showed off their leadership skills during their presentations on Wednesday, April 17, 2024. Each student was given a scenario where they would need to lead, and they presented the methods they would use to reach their goal.
A sea of denim and teal moved through the hallways at Nelson Mandela/Dr. Hosea Zollicoffer School, as students, faculty and staff wore blue for Autism Awareness Month on Thursday, April 18, 2024.
On April 13, 2024, the Denzel Washington School of the Arts middle school drumline emerged victorious in the novice class at the Musical Arts Conference National Championship, securing their place in history. The highly regulated and extremely organized competition took place at Westhill High School in Connecticut on a rainy Saturday.
Cheers erupted with every basket made in the Mount Vernon High School gym, as students with disabilities from Mount Vernon High School and Woodlands High School competed in a game of basketball on Tuesday, April 16, 2024. The game was held through the New York State Pioneer League, which provides students with disabilities the opportunity to play on a team.
The winners of the Mount Vernon City School District “Biggest Loser” challenge gathered around the Education Center with smiling faces, holding their plaques and checks during the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, April 16, 2024.
